Why is eating suddenly so complicated?

GLP BRIEF:Weekend Note

This week: Getting back into a routine can be tricky when your appetite has changed. We're looking at what to eat when nothing sounds good, how GLP-1s might be changing the way people shop for food, an easier approach to breakfast, and one very strange place food can show up: your dreams.

The Big Question
What do you eat when nothing sounds good?

It's 4:00 PM. You haven't eaten much all day. You open the refrigerator and stare inside.

Nothing sounds good.

This can be one of the stranger parts of taking a GLP-1. Food may feel less exciting, while deciding what to eat somehow becomes more difficult.

The practical answer isn't always a better recipe.

Sometimes it's simply making the decision easier.

What people often notice

  • Foods may not feel as appealing as they once did.
  • Trying to build the "perfect" high-protein, high-fiber meal can feel like too much when your appetite is already low.
  • Small, familiar combinations may feel easier than a traditional meal.
  • Having a few dependable foods around can remove some daily decision-making.

You may not need a new recipe.

You may need a short list of foods that require almost no thought.

What to try

  • Keep easy options available: yogurt, fruit, cheese, crackers, eggs or a protein drink.
  • Try a snack-style plate instead of forcing yourself to eat a large meal.
  • Keep simple ingredients that can be assembled in minutes.
  • On difficult days, focus on finding something you can comfortably eat rather than chasing a perfect menu.

GLP Brief Takeaway: When your appetite is small, the goal isn't to make food more impressive. It's to make eating less difficult.

Research Watch
Is Your GLP-1 Changing the Way You Shop?

We already know GLP-1s can change how much people want to eat.

But what happens at the grocery store?

That's one of the questions the Southeast Produce Council and 210 Analytics are exploring.

Their 2026 consumer research includes 1,500 consumers plus an additional sample of 150 GLP-1 medication users. The findings are scheduled to be presented September 10.

Researchers are looking at how GLP-1 use may affect eating occasions, portion sizes, meal planning, food choices, and fruit and vegetable purchases.

In other words:

Your grocery cart may be changing along with your appetite.

What researchers want to understand

  • Are people buying smaller quantities?
  • Are meal plans changing?
  • Are food choices changing?
  • Are people shopping differently for fruits and vegetables?
  • How might retailers need to adapt?

We don't have the answers yet.

But the questions are interesting because your old grocery list may no longer make sense for your current appetite.

A simple shopping rule

Before putting something in the cart, ask:

  • Will I actually want this?
  • Can I eat it comfortably in a smaller portion?
  • Am I likely to finish the package?
  • Can I use it in more than one meal?

GLP Brief Takeaway: Don't automatically shop for the appetite you used to have.

From the Community
Breakfast Doesn't Have to Become a Whole New Project

Starting a GLP-1 can make you question everything—including breakfast.

But one reassuring idea comes up in community conversations:

You don't have to completely reinvent your morning routine on Day One.

Some people keep familiar foods and simply eat less. Others find that their usual breakfast suddenly feels like too much.

What can make mornings easier

  • Start with foods you already know work for you.
  • If your usual breakfast feels too filling, try a smaller portion.
  • Keep simple options such as fruit, yogurt, a cereal bar or a protein drink available.
  • Have a few grab-and-go choices for busy mornings.
  • If a large breakfast doesn't appeal to you, look for other opportunities during the day to eat.

Your breakfast can change as your appetite changes.

You don't have to decide today what breakfast will look like for the next year.

GLP Brief Takeaway: Don't build the perfect GLP-1 breakfast. Build a morning routine you can actually live with.

The “Wait,What?" Story
Why Some GLP-1 Users Say They're Dreaming About Food

Imagine thinking about food less during the day—and then dreaming about it at night.

That's something some members of the GLP-1 community have reported, describing vivid dreams about eating foods they may not even crave while awake.

It's an interesting community observation, but it's not something we should automatically turn into a medical explanation.

The important part

  • A dream about food isn't a binge.
  • It doesn't mean you've done anything wrong.
  • It doesn't automatically mean you're physically hungry.
  • And sometimes a strange dream is simply a strange dream.

Practical reminder: Don't wake up from a dream about eating an entire bakery and start analyzing your willpower.

5-Minute Win

Make Your “Nothing Sounds Good” List

Take five minutes today and write down five foods you can usually manage when your appetite is low.

Keep the list somewhere easy to find.

Your list might include:

  • One protein option
  • One fruit
  • One dairy option
  • One crunchy food
  • One grab-and-go option

Then make sure at least a few are actually in your kitchen.

The point isn't to create another diet rule.

It's to have a plan for the days when opening the refrigerator feels like being asked to solve a difficult exam question.

Bottom Line

Getting back into a routine is hard enough without having to negotiate with your appetite three times a day.

On a GLP-1, simple food, repeatable routines and a little less decision-making can make busy days easier.

You don't need a perfect routine. You need one that works on a Tuesday.

Be well,
